Alright guys I have an '01 grand cherokee, 4.7 V8, with the np242 selectrac transfercase. Basically what is happening is it goes into both 4 high and 4 low, but when a significant amount of torque is applied it disengages from whatever 4x4 gear it's in and will spin only the rear wheels. The shifter is cable operated and the detents are in the transfercase itself. I have serviced the transfercase and the fluid wasn't bad looking. I also didn't find any bits or pieces of anything in it. I have been told and have read that it can be the nylon shift pads on the shift forks. Anyone ever done this on an NP242? The 242 is similar to the 231 except that the 242 has a differential in it to allow it to be run full-time. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'd pull it before you wear the input hub out from it popping out of gear, they are pretty simple, normal hand tools and a couple snap ring pliers is all you need
